These case files have been preserved in order to document the operation of the Government Annuities Act and the period of the Department of Labour's responsibility for it.

Canada. Dept. of Labour. Annuities Branch : Under the Government Annuities Act, 1908 (An Act to authorize the issue of Government Annuities for Old Age, 7-8 Edw. VII, c.5), the Department of Labour became responsible for the administration of a plan by which Canadians could better provide for their old age. First administered by Trade and Commerce in 1908, transferred to Postmaster General in 1912, and then to Labour in May of 1922, the Annuities Branch administered this Act and had Annuities Field Representatives located in the principle cities across Canada. Under the terms of the Act, individuals could purchase "an immediate or deferred annuity" from the government. Employers could also purchase annuities for their employees. While the active promotion and sales force for annuities was discontinued in December 1967 - annuities were still available for sale after this point. Under the Government Annuities Improvement Act (23-24 Eliz. II, c.83, 20 December 1975), the government gave effect to its decision to discontinue the sale of federal government annuities effective 31 March 1979.
