The fonds consists of original correspondence between J. Russell Harper and Blake McKendry, 1982-1983, and between Elizabeth Harper and Blake and Ruth McKendry, 1976-1990; a transcript of a lecture given by Harper to the Canadian Antiques Collector, Symposium '73; a publisher's printed copy of the foreword by J. Russell Harper for Blake McKendry's book, "Folk Art: Primitive and Naïve Art in Canada," 1983; and a memorial service invitation and newspaper clippings of Harper's obituary and funeral notice. These materials add to our understanding of J. Russell Harper during the final days of his career.

McKendry, Blake, 1919- : Blake McKendry. Art and antique collector, photographer, author. Blake McKendry was born in 1919. After his graduation in 1941 from Queen's University, Kingston, he was employed as Liaison-engineer for RCA Victor Company, Montreal, 1941-1946. As a consultant with Smart and Biggar and Fetherstonhaugh and Company, Ottawa, he prepared and prosecuted patent, trademark and copyright applications, 1946-1961. From 1955 to 1980, McKendry owned and operated an art, rare book and antique gallery called the Pioneer Shop, Ottawa. McKendry's publications include "Folk Art: Primitive and Naïve Art in Canada" (Toronto: Methuen, 1983), with a foreword by J. Russell Harper, and "A Dictionary of Folk Artists in Canada from the 17th Century to the Present with Inclusions of Popular Portrait, Topographical, Genre, Religious and Decorative Artists of the 17th, 18th and 19th Centuries" (Elginburg, ON: Blake McKendry Limited, 1988). McKendry's photography has illustrated over a dozen publications and since 1961 he has been an art and antique appraiser and consultant to museums and galleries.
