Series consists of general operational records, central registry files and an agent's letterbook, created and maintained by the Sault Ste. Marie Agency in Ontario. Also included is a sub-series containing microfilmed copies of letterbooks, minute books and land records. While it is possible that some of the originals of the microfilmed copies may be found in other sub-series, these microfilm records have been described in a single sub-series because of the unusual circumstances associated with the filming.

Canada. Dept. of Indian Affairs. Sault Ste. Marie Agency : The "old" Northern Superintendency was re-structured in 1873 with the creation of three offices to administer the bands heretofore administered from one office. Of these three offices, the Northern Superintendency, Division 3, was established to administer the affairs of the Garden River, Batchewana, and Michipicoten bands. Around 1896 this agency was re-designated the Ojibways of Lake Superior - Eastern Division, and then, circa 1929, it was renamed the Sault Ste. Marie Agency. It absorbed the Thessalon agency on June 23, 1938 (order in council 1436-23). In 1972 this agency became the Sault Ste. Marie District Office. On 1 April 1976 the Sault Ste. Marie District was absorbed, along with the Manitoulin Island District Office, into the Sudbury District. Finding aid 10-157: Guide to Indian Affairs Field Office Organization in Ontario, 1845-1990.

The microfilm records in this series were produced by the Archives of Ontario in 1970. The records were filmed in the field at the local office of the Department of Indian Affairs while the records were still in the custody of the Department.
