Collection consists of a painted portrait of Dr. Charles Camsell (1876-1958) by Lilias Torrance Newton. This preliminary oil sketch and a larger portrait were commissioned by a group of Dr. Camsell's friends in 1945. The related portrait is now at the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in Ottawa. Collection also includes two photographs, one of Mrs. Sandy Dyde in her house standing near the portrait which hangs on the wall, the other of Dr. Camsell and Mrs. Camsell taken during a holiday at Jasper Park Lodge.

Newton, Lilias Torrance, 1896-1980 : Lilias Torrance Newton (1896-1980) was a Montreal artist who first studied art at the School of The Art Association of Montreal under Willaim Brymner. Working overseas with the Red Cross during World War I, she returned to painting at the war's end. She became one of the first members of an association of artists in Montreal known as the Beaver Hall Group. The group included Edwin Holgate, Randolph Hewton and Mabel May. In 1921 she had already sold her first painting to the National Gallery of Canada and the same year she married Frederick G. Newton, whom she had earlier met overseas. Their initial financial comfort allowed her to study overseas. Her life continued to follow a pattern of study and dedication to her career and later, despite raising her son, and coping with divorce and financial instability she managed to continue to study and teach art, becoming an acclaimed and prolfic female portraitist. She painted over 300 portraits of her notable contemporaries and is represented in collections across Canada.

General note:

The painting is the first painted portrait of Charles Camsell to be added to NA art holdings as well as the first original work by Lilias Torrance Newton. The painting and photographs complement the existing Camsell Fonds, including papers, photographs and artworks related to Camsell's career.

Custodial history:

The painting was commissioned from Lilias Torrance Newton by a group of friends of Dr. Charles Camsell in 1945. Mrs. Alan Plaunt, later Mrs. Sandy Dyde, was among the group and was also a close friend of the artist. The painting and photographs were in the possession of Mrs. Dyde and upon her death in 1979 were bequeathed to her daughter, the donor, Mrs. Frances Alan Plaunt.
