Canada. Dept. of Indian Affairs. New Brunswick North East Agency : In the years immediately prior to Confederation, Indian affairs in the colony of New Brunswick were managed through the office of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs. Following Confederation, in order to bring the bureaucracy more into line with the system in place elsewhere in the country, an agency was established in 1872 (see Order in Council, 13 January 1872) to administer the affairs of the Indian population of Gloucester, Kent, Northumberland, Restigouche and Westmoreland counties. The New Brunswick North East Agency was superseded in 1949 by the Miramichi Agency. In 1971, the Miramichi Agency and the Saint John River Agency were amalgamated to form the New Brunswick District.
