Sub-series consists of documents relating to land, and include: lists of lots sold, and sales for taxes in arrears; tax deeds; returns of Indian land selections; returns of land improvements; patent documents; patent receipts; affidavits and declarations of settlement duties; settler's licenses; and general correspondence concerning land, although the majority are land assignments, documents which transferred an interest (e.g. license of occupation) in a lot from an initial purchaser to a second buyer before the filing of a homestead fiat (notice that required improvements had been completed). Vol. 12868 includes files on land and chattel mortgages, and indentures for various bands.

These documents were created mainly by the Northern Superintendency, Division 1, and the Manitowaning Agency, and were organized by them in an unknown fashion. However, sometime after 1950, when headquarters introduced the "subject-block" system into the field offices, the original arrangement of these records was disturbed. Each file was given an "agency code," a "subject-block" number (in this case "Block No. 34 - Sale of Indian Land"), and third number which usually indicated the township of the land in question - giving each Indian agency a unique classification code for its townships. The townships and town plots on Manitoulin Island, for which files survive, were designated as follows: "General"-1; "Howland Township"-2; "Manitowaning Townplot"-3; "Sandfield Township"-4; "Shaftesbury Townplot"-5; "Sheguiandah Township"-6; "Tehkummah Township"-9; "Carnarvon Townplot"-10; "Bidwell Township"-11; "Assiginack Township"-12; "Campbell Township"-13; "Allan Township"-14; "Billings Township"-16; "Gore Bay Townplot"-22; "Gordon Township"-23; and "Robinson Township"-23. Thus, land assignments in Campbell Township would have been filed under 488/34-13.

Custodial history:

The records described in this sub-series were transferred to National Archives custody from the Manitoulin Island District Office. They were created mainly by the predecessors of that office, viz. the Northern Superintendency, Division 1, the Manitowaning Agency. However, sometime after 1950, when headquarters introduced the "subject-block" system into the field offices, these records were filed in a new arrangement by the Manitoulin Island Agency.
