Fonds consists of three microfilmed minute books of the refuge containing information associated with the financial operation of the refuge as well as the names and numbers of people, generally young people, who were given shelter. The minute books are as follows: minute book, 1847 to 1850, starting at page 340, in the year 1849 and ending in 1850 at page 536; second minute book, 1848 to 1852, preceded by an index of contents, (male and female refuges), 600 pages; third minute book, 1853 to 1857, also preceded by an an index of contents (female refuge), pages 1 to 161, for the period 1853 to 1854. This material is located on microfilm reel A-2139.

Female Refuge for the Destitute and Male Refuge for the Destitute : The Female Refuge for the Destitute and the Male Refuge for the Destitute was one of many private charitable organizations founded in the nineteenth century in London, England. Specifically located in Hackney, this refuge spanned much of the nineteenth century since it left minutes for the period 1819 to 1877. Records of the general committee for the female refuge, 1812 to 1902, suggest that it operated into the twentieth century. Like many other charitable organizations, it despatched some of its unfortunate clients to other parts of the Empire and Commonwealth, such as Australia. Many of its clients were housed by the refuge on the recommendation of other charitable institutions. Guide to London local history resources: London Borough of Camden.

Custodial history:

The original records are held by the Hackney Archives Department in their records of independent charities, orphanages, almshouses and asylums. The records of this refuge for the destitute were microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah in 1990 and a copy of the microfilmed records, in two microfilm reels, was acquired for the National Archives of Canada by its London Office in 1991. Subsequent to the arrival of the microfilm reels at the National Archives in 1991, one reel has been lost.
