Interdepartmental Committee on the Book of Remembrance (Canada) : As the result of the deliberations of a departmental committee appointed by the Minister of National Defence in 1926 a joint committee of DND and the Department of Public Works was established to supervise the preparation of a Book of Remembrance to be deposited on the Altar in the Memorial Chamber of the Parliament Buildings. Appointed to this Committee by virtue (P.C. 2727, 3 December 1931) were Dr. A.G. Doughty, Chairman, T.W. Fuller, Chief Architect of D.P.W., Col. H.C. Osborne, Secretary of the Imperial War Graves Commission (Canada), Colonel A.F. Duguid, Director, DND Historical Section, E.J. Lemaire, Clerk of the Privy Council and Major C.R. Scott, Assistant Director of Records, DND, as Secretary. In accordance with its term of reference Mr. James Purves, an illuminator, designer and heraldic artist, of London, Ontario was engaged under a contract dated 25 July 1932. The next few years were occupied with research work undertaken by the Committee, the Records Office of DND and Mr. Purves. Standards were set, the general format was outlined by the Committee and work proceeded satisfactorily, or apparently so, until February 1940 when it was discovered that, for a variety of reasons, very little of the required illumination had been done. The committee itself had been re-organized in 1938 by virtue (P.C. 967, 2 May) which appointed Colonel Osborne as Chairman. Now it was necessary to reorganize the work of producing the Book in order to complete it within a reasonable length of time. Mr. Alan Beddoe was taken on as assistant to Mr. Purves, and replaced him on the latter's death in June 1940. A number of other assistants were also hired with the result that the book was completed in time for its installation in the Memorial Chamber by the Earl of Athlone on 11 November 1942.
