Stewart of Victoria, British Columbia who talks about his experiences as a labourer-teacher with Frontier College during the summers of 1919 and 1920. Stewart recalls his work in 1919 "lifting and aligning the track" through the muskeg at Mile 38 at a Canadian Pacific Railroad construction camp near Kenora, Ontario, and in 1920 as a flagman at another CPR camp near Bassano, Alberta. Focusing on the living and working conditions, Stewart remembers the railroad boxcars which were converted into sleeping and eating quarters for the labourers. Also discussed are the 11-hour shifts and the poker and other gambling games every night after work. Stewart instructed the men in English, Canadian geography and citizenship using books, a gramophone and records supplied by Frontier College. Rounding up the interview, Stewart recounts several anecdotes about his summers working for Frontier College.Language:EnglishDetailed holdings information: -
