Series consists of records created and maintained by the Postal Censorship Division. The records include procedure, policy, administrative and operational files arranged in a consecutive file numbering system, consisting of 206 files. In addition, there is an alpha-numeric filing system pertaining specifically to the censorship of prisoners of war and internees' mail. These records also include personnel information cards on individuals employed by the Postal Censorship Division.

Canada. Postal Censorship Division : Postal censorship was inaugurated (P.C. 2506 of 2 September 1939) under the direction of the Postmaster General and the Chief Postal Censor, F.E. Jolliffe. By August 1941, major postal censorship stations had been established at Ottawa, Vancouver, Halifax, Moncton, Saint John, Quebec, Montreal and Toronto, with subsidiary examination centres in 13 other Canadian cities. The Postal Censorship Division was, for varying periods of time responsible for the examination of all mail, including that of civilian internees, enemy prisoners of war and allied merchant seamen. The division also examined mail to and from enemy and captured French territory, enforced Foreign Exchange Control Board regulations concerning the mail handling of securities, currency, bonds and stocks, examined all processed and unprocessed films, airgraphs to Australia and New Zealand, and maintained trade and watch lists under Trading with the Enemy regulations. At the peak of wartime activity in April 1944 the Postal Censorship administration employed 872 people.
