Album was compiled by author and architect Delano Dexter Calvin (1881-1948) or by a member of his family as part of a dissertation on the timber trade of Upper and Lower Canada. It is a set of reproductions (photographs) of images used as part of the dissertation, which was completed in 1930 at Queen's University in Kingston. The photographs document some of the processes, techniques and tools used in the timber industry from 1812 to 1849. A book eventually appeared entitled "A Saga of the St. Lawrence: timber and shipping through three generations" (Toronto: Ryerson Press, 1945).
