Sub-series consists of the personal papers of Dr. G. Malcolm Brown, the second president of the Medical Research Council (1965-1978). The sub-series comprises several bodies of information, starting with a collection of Dr. Brown's personal medical research material and notes classified by subject. Other materials include: files relating to the Board of Trustees of Queen's University which contain notices of meetings, agenda, minutes, and Principal's reports; files relating to business trips; a body of correspondence between Dr. Brown and faculties, hospitals, and universities in both Ottawa and Kingston; correspondence between Dr. Brown and various committees and councils such as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and their various committees, including reports, papers, articles, minutes, agenda, newsletters, and photographs.

The textual records in this sub-series also include a body of material on various studies relating to hematology, gastroenterology, nutrition, malaria, cardiovascular diseases, cold acclimatization and hypertension, as well as miscellaneous medical reports. A number of common place files containing medical articles and newspaper clippings also exist. Furthermore, the sub-series embodies a quantity of biographical information including Dr. Brown's curriculum vitae, publications lists, completed engagements, invitations, notes, cards, photographs, and letters. However, the bulk of the sub-series consists of general correspondence between Dr. Brown and various affiliations including: the American College of Physicians, the National Cancer Institute of Canada, the Royal Society of Canada, the Muskoka Hospital Fund, the Canadian Foundation for the Advancement of Therapeutics, the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, the National Research Council, the American Society of Hematology, the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, the Arctic Institute of North America, and the American Clinical and Climatological Association.

Other records in this sub-series consist of 47 Russian-language post cards, a large map of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in Russian, and 5 pins and 3 medallions commemorating Dr. Brown's trip to the USSR shortly before his death. Also included are 27 black and white photographs relating to Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Council annual meetings 1955-1957, McLaughlin Foundation Edward Gallie visiting professorship in Toronto; Dr. G. Malcom Brown's trip to Siberia in 1976 and his portrait taken by Yousuf Karsh in 1970.

Brown, G. Malcolm, 1916-1977 : Doctor G. (George) Malcolm Brown was born in Campbellford, Ontario on July 16, 1916. He received his MD from Queen's University in 1938, and a D Phil. degree from Oxford in 1940, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He also held honorary degrees from several Canadian universities, including: an LLD from University of Saskatchewan (1969); an MD from Laval University (1969); a D.Sc from Memorial University (1969), an MD from Université de Montréal (1971); and a D.Sc. from McGill University (1975). Following his return to Canada from military service overseas (1943-1946), Dr. Brown became first an associate professor (1946-1951), then professor of medicine at Queen's University (1951-1965).

In 1965, Dr. Brown left Queen's to come to Ottawa to serve as the second President of the Medical Research Council of Canada (MRC). During his tenure as President (1965-1977), he was also a professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa. He was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1976, and died while in office on May 19, 1977.

Throughout his career, Dr. Brown was an active member of many government and non-government organizations, and published widely in the fields of malaria research, cold physiology, haematology, and gastroenterology. He served on the Defence Research Board's Panel on Arctic Medical Research (1947-1954), and the Panel on Nutrition (1952-1958), the Defence Medical Research Coordinating Committee (1967-1970), and the Department of National Health and Welfare's Canadian Council on Nutrition (1950-1954). As well, he served as: a Member of Council and later President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (1949-1958); a Member of Council and then President/Member of the Executive of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1960-1966); Director of the Canadian Foundation for the Advancement of Therapeutics (1963-1971); Chairman of the Research Committee for the Muskoka Hospital Memorial Research Fund (1965-1970); and Regent and later Master, of the American College of Physicians (1965-1973). He was also a member of a number of associations, including the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Society of Haematology, the American Clinical and Climatological Society, and the National Cancer Institute of Canada.
