This sub-series consists of subject files (press reports, memos, position papers and correspondence) on the key environmental issues of the day, such as leaded gas, acid rain, environmental security, clean-up of the Sydney Tar Ponds, the ozone layer and the like, which reflect the minister's attempts to define government policy toward these issues.

A number of files deal with the government's activity in preparing the new Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA), with public input on this issue.

There are also a number of reports on environmental issues in this series, many of them published; however, because of the small printing runs of such reports, and their relevance to understanding the issue of the environment during the Mulroney government, these reports have been retained. A few notables are 'Pollution in the St. Clair River', 'Federal water policy', 'Climate change digest', and 'National inventory of PCB waste storage sites and wildlife habitat'. Most of these reports are authored by some level or other of governmental authority.

Finally, there are a number of publicity kits here (Environment week, CEPA and acid rain), reflecting how the government sought to interest the Canadian public in dealing with matters of concern in the environment portfolio.
