Sub-series consists of a nominal index to the Branch's central registry. The computerized index was originally compiled in 1973 by the land administration unit, Northern Program, of the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs. Most of these records consist of homestead applications, and consequently, were transferred by the Department to the provincial archives in Victoria, British Columbia, in the mid 1970s. However, the sub-series also includes some general subject files on town sites, Indian lands, and natural resource development in the Railway Belt. The index has been retained by the National Archives in order to give researchers some sense of the major administrative functions of the Branch.
