Sub-series contains the minutebook and shareholders' minutes of the Penman Manufacturing Company, 1893-1906. In addition to corporate matters, the minutebook includes descriptions for the Paris Plow Company which was John Penman's project for the economic development of Paris, Ontario. The minutebook also contains the purchase agreement between The Penman Manufacturing Co. and Dominion Textile.

Legal records, including letters patent, agreements, mortgages, title deeds and industrial patents which document the development of the Penman Manufacturing Co. can be found in the Penmans Limited sub-sub-series and the Dominion Textile Inc. series. Among the papers is the 1867 agreement between John Penman and W.E. Adams to establish a knitting mill in Paris, Ontario. There are also agreements between the Penman Manufacturing Company and the various companies it acquired, as well as the 1906 bill of sale between the Penman Manufacturing Co. and Penmans Ltd.

Sub-series also consists of four sub-sub-series comprising the records of Penmans Ltd., Penman's Industrial Knit Limited, John Gordon & Son Limited, and the Watson Manufacturing Company of St. Catharines Limited.

The Penman Manufacturing Co : The Penman Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1882 in Paris, Ontario by John Penman. The establishment of the firm dates back to 1868, when Penman and W.E. Adams opened their first knitted goods factory in Paris. In 1882, W.E. Adams retired from the firm, and John Penman became the president and managing director of the new company. Penman built the business into the largest knitting firm in Canada, assuming control of six smaller knitting mills in Ontario and Quebec. Acquisitions included the following companies: The Grand Valley Knitting Works of Paris (1887); The Coaticook Knitting Company, Coaticook, Quebec; The Peninsula Knitting Mill, Thorold, Ontario; and The Norfolk Knitting Company of Port Dover, Ont. (all in 1883). The company assumed control of the Watson Manufacturing Company of St. Catharines in 1897 and in 1903 purchased the Granite Mills in St. Hyacinthe, Quebec from the Canadian Woolen Company.

The Directors of Dominion Textile acquired control of The Penman Manufacturing Company in 1906 and the firm was reorganized as Penmans Limited.
