Robinson, Christopher Blackett, 1837-1923 : Christopher Blackett Robinson was born in Thorah, Upper Canada, in 1837. After editing and publishing the BEAVERTON POST, he moved to Toronto where he published the CANADA PRESBYTERIAN. In 1883 he co-founded a new journal entitled THE WEEK with Goldwin Smith, which took up the work of the defunct CANADIAN MONTHLY. Until it ceased publication in 1896, THE WEEK was the main vehicle for the work of the Confederation poets and essayists of the period. Robinson died in Ottawa in 1923.

Smith, Goldwin, 1823-1910 : Goldwin Smith was born in England in 1923 and educated at Oxford where he subsequently taught Modern History. In 1868, Smith emigrated to the United States to join the faculty of the newly established Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. He settled in 1871 and concentrated on journalism. The founder of various newspapers and periodicals including The Bystander (1880) and the Week (1883), Smith promoted closer commercial and political alliance of Canada with the United Kingdom, his lectures, essays and reviews revealed a wide interest in such contemporary issues as imperialism, Home Rule, prohibition, woman suffrage, evolution, biblical criticism and socialism. He became best known as the advocate of union with the US as a prerequisite to moral unification of the Anglo-Saxon race.
