McDermid talks about his ancestors who had "signed that terrible contract" which indentured the early settlers to Laird Archibald MacNab, Scottish feudal lord of MacNab Township from 1823 to 1843. McDermid recalls humorous stories of life on the family homestead and of the lumbering industry in the Valley.
