Interview of Alex Campbell, former vice-president and manger of the Western Division of the Dominion Bridge Company. Campbell recalls his first job with Dominion Bridge in 1920 as a draftsman after his graduation from engineering. Among the early projects Campbell worked on are the Banff Springs Hotel, the Paliser Hotel in Calgary, the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Co. in Flin Flon, Man. and the Saskatchewan Hotel in Regina which was the first structure using steel joists. Also recalled are the "lean years" of the Depression followed by World War II when Dominion Bridge built Briston aircraft and parts and several bridges on the Canadian portion of the Alaska Highway. Other topics include: the aquisition by Dominion Bridge of its four main subsidiaries in Western Canada; and the construction of the International Nickel Company at Thompson, Man., Dominion Bridge's biggest contract in Western Canada. Comments on Sam Campbell, former manager of the Western Division of the company, and A. H. Cowie, former vice-president of the company, round out the interview.
