Drama about how a young man's plans are changed suddenly wnen his mother dies, leaving his brother's fate in his hands. Larry, a kind and gentle man in his 20s, is mentally handicapped. He goes into his family's chicken coop to see his pet, a small hen. Larry notices something is wrong with the bird and he lifts it out of its cage and carries it into the house to show his mother. She is a no-nonsense woman, hardworking and sensible, and has taken care of Larry his whole life. She sees that the bird is injured and tells Larry not to worry, explaining how to take care of it. Larry's brother Duncan drops by on his way to town. He talks to his mother, arm wrestles with Larry and says he will stop in again on his way back. When Duncan returns, he finds his mother collapsed at the kitchen table, and Larry, thinking that she is asleep, gently stroking her hair, waiting for her to wake up. Duncan's plans to accept a promotion in Montreal are now thrown into disarray. After the funeral, their sister, Debbie, asks Duncan if he still intends to take the job in Quebec. Duncan says yes but that Larry will have to be looked after. Debbie, afraid that Duncan will ask her to look after Larry, says Larry should be put in a home or an institution. Duncan thinks Larry could continue living in their mother's house, but Debbie does not agree, stating that he cannot take care of himself. Duncan must choose between risking his future and taking care of Larry. <30mn>
