Film starts with a letter, dated March 20th 1911, which reads in part "...I regret that I cannot visit you, but have sent my son José. He looks forward with pleasure to the visit..."~Zelda (Mary Pickford), her father and mother, and a hired man await the arrival of José outside their house. All are dressed in Spanish style. José arrives on horseback and is introduced to Zelda. He kisses her hand and a flirtation begins. Zelda wanders in the garden to attract José's attention and he follows her. The mother and hired man appear, looking for the couple, and the mother sends Zelda away. Two of Zelda's girlfriends appear and Zelda goes off with them. The trio decide on a conspiracy and dress alike. Zelda's two friends explain their scheme to José. One of the girls changes places with Zelda who is sitting on a bench with the mother who has dozed off. Free, Zelda runs to join José who kisses her. The hired man alerts the mother who discovers that her companion is not Zelda. They find another of the girls but she too is not who they seek. Proposing to give the parents a fright, José picks Zelda up and wades into a turbulent river. The mother and hired man arrive and the two parties gesticulate to each other. José threatens to throw Zelda into the water if they are not permitted to marry. Then the father arrives and looks irate as the young couple kiss. José then picks Zelda up again and carries her back. They struggle ashore and all are united on dry land. A title reads "The parental blessing." <14mn 44s>
