Press conference held by the Minister for International Trade, External Affairs Canada, the Honourable Pat Carney; Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic and Trade Policy Branch, Tony Eyton, and by Director General, Trade Policy Bureau, Howard R. Wilson.~In an opening statement, Ms. Carney explains the rationale behind Canadian government positions taken with respect to the implementation of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade Council decisions, including the GATT panel report on Canadian restrictions on foreign fishing of west coast salmon and herring, as well as on Canadian liquor board operations.~In a question and answer period, the following topics are also addressed: the establishment of an intergovernmental negotiating committee to look into liquor board marketing practices in Canada; the GATT (fish) "consistent landing" requirement including the Canadian government prohibition of fish sales on the high seas, and Alaskan purchase of Canadian fish; the Pakistan GATT meeting where textiles are to be discussed; the lowering of interprovincial trade barriers; and beer trade with respect to the Free Trade Agreement. <27mn>
