Press briefing held by the Office of the Minister for International Trade, External Affairs Canada, represented by Tony Eyton, Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic and Trade Policy Branch, and by Howard Wilson, Director General, Trade Policy Bureau, to familiarize journalists with information of a technical nature surrounding the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) panel reports on the sale of wine and beer in Canada, arising from European Economic Community complaints.~In an opening statement, the following topics are discussed: the likelihood of provincial adoption of the GATT ruling; tariffs on wine and beer in Canada; potential for Canadian wine industry retaliation; the Grande Committee [sic] (the intergovernmental negotiating committee); GATT procedure with respect to filing for unfair trade practices; Canadian government procedures for Canadian companies wishing to file for unfair international trade practices; and the demands made by the European Economic Community at the GATT Council.
