Groupe aérien maritime : Le Groupe aérien maritime (GAM) est composé de personnel et d'avions du Commandement aérien; toutefois, lorsque le Commandement maritime (COMAR) a recours aux services du GAM, il en assume le commandement. Le Commandant du GAM est responsable des éléments aériens qui apportent du soutien au COMAR. Voici quelques-unes de ces responsabilités opérationnelles : le maintien de forces aériennes prêtes au combat, le soutien logistique à la flotte, les opérations de recherche et de sauvetage en mer, la surveillance de la souveraineté canadienne, la lutte contre le trafic des stupéfiants, et les infractions aux lois et règlements canadiens sur la pollution.
Le Groupe aérien maritime, le Groupe de Défense aérienne, le Groupe de Transport aérien et le 10e Groupement aérien tactique sont les quatre groupes opérationnels qui relèvent du Commandement aérien. Le Commandement aérien a résulté de la fusion du Commandement de la Défense aérienne et du Commandement du transport aérien le 2 septembre 1975.
Le 2 septembre 1975, la BFC Greenwood et la BFC Summerside ont été transférées au Groupe aérien maritime, faisant ainsi partie du Commandement aérien. En vertu du Décret ministériel d'organisation 2.14.3 des Forces canadiennes, daté du 9 septembre 1977, le 407e Escadron a été intégré au 77e Commandement aérien et affecté au Groupe aérien maritime. La BFC Comox est passée du Groupe de Défense aérienne au Groupe aérien maritime le 15 juillet 1982. Le 15 mai 1993, le Décret ministériel d'organisation 92124 confiait aux Forces maritimes du Pacifique [FMAR(P)] la responsabilité d'exercer, par l'intermédiaire du Commandant du Groupe aérien maritime, un contrôle opérationnel sur les éléments suivants : toutes les ressources chargées d'exécuter des tâches opérationnelles pour appuyer les Forces maritimes du Pacifique [FMAR(P)]; les détachements d'hélicoptères du Groupe aérien maritime affectés aux Forces maritimes du Pacifique et embarqués dans ses navires; et le 422e Escadron de transport et de sauvetage, mais uniquement pour les opérations de recherche et de sauvetage.
En l997, les quatre groupes opérationnels du Commandement aérien, soit le Groupe de chasse, le Groupe Transport aérien, le Groupe aérien maritime et le 10e Groupe aérien tactique, ont fusionné pour former la 1re Division aérienne du Canada (1 DAC).
Lors de la réorganisation du Commandement aérien, en 1997, le Groupe aérien maritime cesse d'exister. Comme tous les autres escadrons du Commandement aérien, les escadrons maritimes relèvent maintenant de la 1re Division aérienne de Winnipeg. Les commandants de deux Composantes aériennes maritimes subalternes, Atlantique et Pacifique, assurent la coordination de toutes les opérations aériennes maritimes en collaboration avec les commandements maritimes correspondants, à Halifax et à Esquimalt.
