The fonds consists of some 30 letters to Hume-Campbell from Jeffrey Amherst, 1778; N. Balfour, 1777-1779; and Sir Francis Carr Clerke, 1775-1779, regarding the American Revolution and British military activity. Of interest are the letters by Clerke relating to troops in Boston, General Gage's engagements; General Burgoyne; the situation in Quebec and the artillery encampment near Chambly; the encounter between rebels and British troops at Trois-Rivieres and the resulting casualties; and an incident in which the wife of a soldier in the 47th Regiment captured six rebels (letter of 13 July 1776). Other subjects discussed by Clerke include horseracing and lottery tickets. The collection is one of several located on microfilm reel A-1959.

Hume of Berwick, Alexander Hume-Campbell, Baron, 1750-1781 : Alexander Hume, afterwards Hume-Campbell, styled Lord Polwarth, was born on 30 July 1750 the second but first surviving son and heir apparent of Hugh, 3rd Earl of Marchmont, being the only son by his second wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Windmill Crompton.

On 16 July 1772, he married Amabell, first daughter of Philip Yorke, second Earl of Hardwicke, by Jemima, suo jure, Marchioness Grey and Baroness Lucas of Crudwell, only daughter and heir of John Campbell, third Earl of Breadalbane. In consequence of his marriage, he assumed the name of Campbell after that of Hume. He was created a peer of England on 20 May 1776, Baron Hume of Berwick. He died on 9 March 1781 at the age of 30 and his Barony became extinct. His widow became suo jure Baroness Lucas of Crudwell on the death of her mother in 1797 and became, in 1816, the Countess de Grey of Wrest.
