Régiment aéroport du Canada : Les origines du Régiment aéroporté remontent au 1er Bataillon de parachutistes canadien qui avait combattu avec la British 6th Airborne Division durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. La Troupe mobile d'attaque aérotransportable avait été créée peu de temps après la guerre pour permettre de transporter rapidement, n'importe où au Canada, des soldats de l'infanterie entraînés au saut en parachute; on voulait surtout pouvoir assurer une défense contre des parachutistes soviétiques qui auraient pu atterrir dans le Nord du Canada. Durant l'été 1948, la Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry a été un des trois premiers bataillons à recevoir de l'instruction en saut en parachute. En 1958, à cause d'équipement inadéquat et d'un nombre insuffisant de soldats, la Force de frappe mobile avait été réduite à une compagnie provenant de chaque régiment d'infanterie et était dès lors désignée sous le nom de « Force de défense du Canada ». Affecté à la Force mobile, le Régiment aéroporté du Canada a été formé le 8 avril 1968. En tant qu'unité de parachutistes, le Régiment s'est vu confier la tâche de demeurer en état d'alerte élevé et de maintenir un haut niveau de capacité opérationnelle de façon à pouvoir servir de force aéroportée rapidement déployable et capable d'appuyer plusieurs rôles, tels que : l'aide aux autorités civiles, la défense du Canada, les missions des Nations Unies, et des opérations de combat circonscrites ou générales. Le Régiment initial était composé des éléments suivants : le quartier général du Régiment aéroporté et l'Escadron des transmissions, le 1er Commando aéroporté, le 2e Commando aéroporté, la 1re Batterie aéroportée, le 1er Escadron de campagne aéroporté et la 1re Compagnie aéroportée de service. Lorsqu'une autre unité de Commando est venue s'ajouter au Régiment aéroporté, les effectifs ont augmenté et ont été répartis entre les trois régiments « parents » au sein des Forces canadiennes. Ainsi, les trois unités de Commando affectées au Régiment aéroporté ressemblaient davantage à trois petits bataillons au sein d'une Brigade. La majorité des soldats du Régiment aéroporté était stationnée à Edmonton. Toutefois, le 1er Commando - à l'exception d'une compagnie - était stationné à la BFC Valcartier. Le 15 juillet 1977, le commandement du Régiment a été confié à la Force d'opérations spéciales et le Régiment a déménagé à la BFC Petawawa, où il a continué à se concentrer sur l'instruction individuelle, c'est-à-dire sur la façon de former de parachutistes et de soldats d'élite. Cependant, après la série de scandales et de mesures disciplinaires prises à la suite de la mission de maintien de la paix du Régiment en Somalie en 1992-1993, l'unité a été démantelée le 5 mars 1995.
