Milice - Secteur du Manitoba : En 1946, le Commandement des Prairies a été formé à partir des Districts militaires 10 et 12 afin de coordonner les unités actives et les unités de réserve dans la région des Prairies. La Première réserve (Milice) a été réorganisée le 1er septembre 1970. Elle serait dès lors composée des cinq groupements suivants, qui relevaient tous du commandement de la Force mobile : le Secteur de l'Atlantique de la Milice; le Secteur de l'Est de la Milice; le Secteur central de la Milice; le Secteur des Prairies de la Milice; et le Secteur du Pacifique de la Milice. Chacun des cinq secteurs de la Milice comprenait du personnel de soutien de la Force régulière. Le Secteur des Prairies de la Milice (connu à l'origine sous le nom de District de Winnipeg de la Milice et rebaptisé en octobre 1977) comprenait les provinces de l'Alberta, de la Saskatchewan, du Manitoba , ainsi que les unités stationnées à Thunder Bay et à Kenora. L'Ordonnance d'organisation des Forces canadiennes 3.103, datée du 1er avril 1985, affectait au Secteur des Prairies de la Milice des districts distincts délimités par leur situation géographique : Thunder Bay, le Manitoba, la Saskatchewan, le Nord de l'Alberta et le Sud de l'Alberta. Quant au Secteur du Manitoba de la Milice, il détenait le contrôle opérationnel des unités suivantes : le quartier général du Secteur du Manitoba de la Milice, The Fort Garry Horse, le 26e Régiment d'artillerie de campagne et sa fanfare, la 13e Batterie de campagne, le 26e Régiment d'artillerie de campagne, la 116e Batterie de campagne indépendante, le 21e Escadron du génie, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles et leur fanfare, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada et leur fanfare, le 17e Bataillon des services (Winnipeg) et la 17e Compagnie médicale (Winnipeg). La mission du Secteur du Manitoba de la Milice consistait à fournir des forces de la Milice qui soient prêtes sur le plan opérationnel à appuyer la Force régulière. Ses principales fonctions étaient les suivantes : documenter tout le personnel recruté par les unités de la Milice de Winnipeg; donner des cours de perfectionnement aux sous-officiers et aux officiers, coordonner les exercices d'instruction des unités et distribuer l'équipement et les approvisionnements aux unités. Son quartier général était installé au manège militaire Minto Armoury, Winnipeg; la BFC Winnipeg fournissait les services de soutien. En décembre 1991, le District du Manitoba a fait l'objet d'une nouvelle désignation, soit le District Manitoba-Lakehead, sous la nouvelle formation du Secteur de l'Ouest de la Force terrestre.
