Sewell, Stephen, 1770-1832 : Stephen Sewell was born in Cambridge, Mass. and moved to New Brunswick as a Loyalist refugee. Having been admitted to the bar there in 1791, he moved to Quebec. He then qualified to practice in Lower Canada, where his brother Jonathan Sewell was rising to become chief justice. Stephen was named solicitor general in 1809, but lost the office. He served for the summer of 1817 as secretary to the boundary commissioners under the Treaty of Ghent. In later years he had other appointments, including as a commissioner of the Lachine Canal.

General note:

The miniature is a portrait of Jocelyn Arthur Johnstone said to be related to Stephen Sewell by marriage. The tintype is said to be a portrait of Stephen Sewell, likely a posthumous copy of another because the actual date is ca. 1855 and not the date of 1832 as given by Sotheby's. The daguerrotype is a portrait of unidentified woman possibly of the Sewell Family.

Custodial history:

All items were acquired at Sotheby's Toronto Auction on December 2, 1998, lot 158. Provenance is said to be by descent through the Sewell family, Islington, Ontario.
