Description:

David Pitt, a writer and Professor Emeritus in the English Department at Memorial University in Newfoundland, thalks about life as the son of a Methodist minister serving in Newfoundland outports in the 1930s. He talks about the financial hardships of the people, including the shipments of "poor barrels" -- barrels of clothes sent from Toronto and other, better-off people living elsewhere in Canada. Pitt wrote a biography of Newfoundland poet Ned Pratt and compares his life and the lives of other outport residents to that of Pratt in the outports at the turn of the century. Also discussed are: the poverty of the people; their efforts to obtain food through farming and fishing; how the minister received payment from the congregation in produce rather than money; recreation in the outports; social welfare (the dole); other religious denominations; getting mail and supplies; schools and teachers.
