Canadian politician Paul Martin talks about the people and circumstances that influenced him to follow a career in politics. Martin recalls viewing Sir Wilfrid Laurier in his casket. He describes his bilingual family background, his first election to Parliament and the Canadian Prime Ministers under which he served: William Lyon Mackenzie King, Louis St. Laurent, Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Trudeau. Martin discusses Canada's health and welfare program, his efforts to set up better health and social welfare programs and Canada's foreign policy. Also described are some of Martin's cabinet colleagues, his unsuccessful compaign for the leadership of the Liberal Party in 1968, and his work as a Member of Parliament in serving his constituents, the need for world peace, and the political ambitions of his son, Paul Martin Jr. He comments on the importance for politicians to deposit their papers in the National Archives, stating that politicians such as Louis St. Laurent are not as important in our written history as they should be because they left few documents behind.
