This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accessions. Sub-series consists of administrative and operational registry files related to organization, including records on the amalgamation of the Official Languages Branch and the Employment Equity Branch in 1992 before the functions were subsequently merged into the comprehensive Human Resource Branch in 1996. The files also incorporate operational committee meetings within the amalgamated branch and symposia sponsored by the branch.

The 47 map sheets were used by the Official Languages and Employment Equity Branch of Treasury Board to analyse the language characteristics of various areas throughout Canada.

Canada. Official Languages and Employment Equity Branch : The Official Languages and Employment Equity Branch was the transient entity created in 1992 to administer both the components of Official Language Programs and employment equity programs, both of which Treasury Board had been instrumental in developing on a government wide basis from a very early stage. The merged Branch entity was itself merged into the larger Human Resources Branch in 1996. The administrative linkage of the two programs was finally broken when a separate Official Languages Branch was reconstituted in 1999-2000. The Official Languages and Employment Equity Branch ensured ongoing liaison with federal institutions for Employment Equity and Official Languages programs. The branch analysed annual reports with client federal institutions, monitored the implementation of the programs, evaluated the efficiency of the two Programs and provided operational guidance.

This sub-series arises from a complex organizational evolution of the entities responsible for the administration of the TBS Official Languages program sub-function and related activities. In fact the whole set of sub-series under the series entitled Official Languages Branch is related to major revisions to the classification system between the mid-1990s and 2003. The permanent volumes described in the sub-series "operational registry files" reflect the records classification systems used more or less continuously from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. The records in the subseries associated with Official Languages and Employment Equity, reflect a classification set up in the early1990s. Most of the accessions attached to both of these sub-series and those attached at the higher series-level descriptive record in fact represent a records classification system created in 1999 using the prefix LEB (which may logically be its own separate non-provenancial sub-series). The sub-series entitled operational registry files of the Official Languages Function reflects a revised classification system created in 2003.

Two versions of C0000585 project files exist. The first version includes the original ATLAS GIS version for DOS which was transferred to the National Archives. The second version includes ATLAS GIS version 2.0 for Windows which was created by the National Archives while arranging the collection.
