Heywood, Irene, 1913-1989 : Irene Heywood was born in 1913 and was raised on a farm near Boissevain, Manitoba, and in Trenton, Ontario. She attended the Winnipeg School of Art, 1931 to 1934, where she studied under its Principal, the Canadian artist Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald, with whom she had an affair. After leaving art school, she worked as a photographer's assistant and for an engraving firm. She continued her art studies, taking night classes from FitzGerald, and she exhibited with the Manitoba Society of Art. She left Manitoba in 1940 and worked in Toronto with the designer René Cera at Eaton's Fine Art Galleries. She continued to correspond with FitzGerald and saw him on visits to Manitoba. She later married the Canadian folksinger and songwriter Wade Hemsworth and became an art reviewer for the Montreal "Gazette" (1967-1970) and then the Montreal "Star" (1971-1972). She published a biographical work on the German-born Quebec artist Helmut Gransow in 1986 and died in 1989.

Custodial history:

The records were transferred to the National Archives in 1998 via the publisher John Flood, who had earlier received most of them directly from Irene Heywood's husband, Wade Hemsworth of Morin Heights, Quebec. The original letters from L.L. FitzGerald were in the possession of art curator Michael Parke-Taylor of Toronto, who forwarded them, along with transcripts he had prepared, to John Flood in 1998, to join the rest of Heywood's papers at the National Archives.
