The series consists of files documenting Sydney Newman's two-part career with the National Film Board, first as director/producer 1941-1952 and then as Film Commissioner 1970-1975, as well as motion pictures produced by him at the NFB, radio and television broadcasts about the NFB, broadcasts by or about Newman while he was NFB Film Commissioner and a videotape of a speech by Newman accepting an award on behalf of NFB filmmaker Norman McLaren. The first part includes files of clippings, correspondence and memoranda, John Grierson speeches, material on Norman McLaren, memorabilia, reference material, reports on television, scripts for the "Canada Carries On" Series, and a speech by Newman. Among the correspondents are Jim MacKay, Ralph Foster 1949; and George Dunning, Allan Wargon 1950.

The second part includes files on the National Film Board's anniversary, the book "Between Friends", correspondence and memoranda, material on a global film policy, some miscellaneous material on director Daisy de Bellefeuille, papers, reference material, a report by Ross McLean, speeches by Newman, and other material. Among the correspondents are Ross McLean, Araby Lockhart, Silvio Narizzano, Ted Allan, Joe Schull, Herbert Steinhouse, Guy Glover 1970; P.K. Page, Arthur Irwin, Harry Rasky, Julian Roffman, Charles Israel, William Weintraub 1971; Hugh MacLennan, Molly Bobak, Art Price, George Johnston 1972; David Attenborough, Jean-Louis Roux 1973; and Daryl Duke 1974.

Arranged in two parts reflecting the two stages of Newman's involvement with the National Film Board, each arranged alphabetically.
