Item is a handwritten journal kept by William Thomas Hunt describing his activities in Canada, the United States and England from 1837 to 1845. Located on microfilm reel A-1962, it begins with an account of the 85th Regiment of Foot's sleigh journey from St. John, N.B., to Quebec in December 1837 to quell the rebellion in Lower Canada. Moving to Montreal, the journal provides details of manoeuvres to counter the patriotes as well as garrison duty commentary. Regimental activities in Upper Canada notably Toronto, St. Thomas, London and Sandwich (Windsor) are also recounted. The defeat of rebels at the hands of Indians and the activities of other regiments are described.The last 55 pages of the journal describe Hunt's service in England after 1842 until 1845.

Hunt served as the officer in charge of regimental courts martial throughout his Canadian service. The journal provides details of men charged. Included is a four-column list of the men tried by court martial after 6 August 1839: date, name, crimes, and court.

The journal provides social and political commentary. There are references, for example, to garrison balls and funerals, and to principal political figures of the day such as Lord Durham, Sir Charles Bagot and Sir John Colborne.

Hunt, William Thomas : Military officer

Hunt flourished in the period 1811 to 1845. He initially entered British military service in the militia, 1811 to 1813. On 29 April 1813 he became an ensign with the 85th Regiment of Foot. He received a commission as lieutenant on 17 November 1814 and purchased a captaincy on 9 April 1825. There followed a commission as Brevet-Major, 28 June 1838 and a purchased commission as regimental major on 1 November 1839. He served as Lieutenant-Colonel, unattached, from 5 August 1842 and as Lieutenant-Colonel with full pay on 1 August 1845. This entire period, from 1813 to 1845, was served with the 85th Regiment of Foot.

Hunt served with the 85th Regiment of Foot in Canada from 1837 to 1843. During this period, a detachment of the regiment served at St. John, New Brunswick in 1837. It travelled by sleigh to Quebec and from there to Montreal. Hunt also travelled to various points in Upper Canada with the regiment before returning to Montreal, Quebec and St. John. The detachment left for England in 1843.

Hunt was married to Fanny and had eight children including three sons who, like himself, served in British regiments. His sons George and Robert served with the 57th Regiment and died in India. His son William served with the 74th Regiment. His daughters included: Harriette, Susan, Sophia, Caroline and Barbara.
