Porter, John, 1921-1979 : John Arthur Porter, born in 1921 at Vancouver, B.C., served in the Canadian Army from 1941 to 1946 with intelligence duties in Britain, Italy and Northwestern Europe. He graduated from the London School of Economics in 1949 and joined the staff of Carleton College (later Carleton University) the same year. He was able to build up a solid foundation for one of Canada's best known Departments of Sociology. From 1963 to 1966 he was Director of the Social Sciences Division of the Faculty of Arts as well as Professor of Sociology. He served as Vice-President (Academic) of Carleton in 1977 and 1978.

He published many books and learned articles. His book The Vertical Mosaic, 1965, became a classic in the field of Canadian sociology. Other notable books he authored or co-authored were Canadian Society, 1964 and Does Money Matter? Prospects for Higher Education, 1973. Shortly before his death, ten essays appeared in a work known as The Measure of Canadian Society: Education, Equality, and Opportunity, 1979.

Some honours he received were his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, the McIvor prize of the American Sociological Association and honorary degrees from McMaster and Waterloo Universities.
