1 audio reel (40 min).Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of reminiscences, correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings and clippings concerning Brandon and Carleton Universities 1942-1969; the Encyclopedia Canadiana 1952-1958; UNESCO 1939-1955; his service as Canada's first Ambassador to the Vatican 1968-1973; some twenty or more educational and pacificist organizations, such as Amnesty International, Canadian Legion War Services and the World Federalists of Canada, and correspondence from Miss Elizabeth MacCallum (1895-1985), a retired senior Canadian External Affairs Officer, on education and reforestation in Turkey, attendance of Turkisk students at Brandon University and Mr. Robbins offer of a teaching post at the University to her, which she declined, 1961-1984.
Fonds contains photographs of John E. Robbins carrying out some of his official functions as public servant, editor of Encyclopedia Canadiana, and as ambassador to the Vatican, 1931-1970.
The fonds also contains a sound recording of banquet remarks by and about Robbins, 1969.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Robbins, John E., 1903- : John E. Robbins was born in 1903 at Hampton, Durham County, Ontario. He was educated in Ontario and Manitoba, receiving a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Manitoba in 1928 and 1929 and a Ph.D. from the University of Ottawa in 1935. He taught school in Saskatchewan from 1922 to 1925. In 1930, he joined the Educational Statistics Division of the Dominion Bureau of Statistics becoming Chief of the Division in 1936. He resigned in 1951 to become Editor-in-Chief of the Encyclopedia Canadiana from 1952 to 1958. His next post was Executive-Secretary-Treasurer of the Social Science Research Council, 1958-60. Dr. Robbins then was appointed President of Brandon College from 1960 to 1969. In 1969, he was appointed Canada's first Ambassador to the Vatican where he served until his retirment in 1973.
Dr. Robbins served on the executive of many organizations such as the Board of Directors of Carleton University, 1942-1961, as Chairman of the Canadian Legion War Services and Educational Services Committee in W.W. II, Charter member of the United Nations Association in Canada from 1945, Vice-Chairman of the National Extension Committee of the Y.M.C.A., 1950-60. Other organizations in which he was actively involved were the Y.M.C.A., the World Federalists of Canada, UNESCO, the Royal Statistical Society and the Canadian Writers Foundation.Additional information:General note:Presented in 1979, 1981 and 1987 by John E.
