CBC Radio coverage of the ceremony to open the Bytown Bridges in Ottawa, by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. The Bytown Bridges are two bridges across the Rideau River at Green Island.~During a lengthy wait for the arrival of the Queen Mother, an unidentified announcer describes the scenery, Rideau Falls and the discovery of Rideau Falls by Samuel de Champlain. He reads a passage about the Falls from Champlain's diary. A band plays as the announcer speaks. The announcer goes on to describe: the Rideau and Ottawa rivers; buildings in the area, namely the National Research Council, Earnscliffe (the home of the British High Commissioner), Rideau Hall, the French Embassy, 24 Sussex Drive (the Prime Minister's residence) and the history of the bridges in the area. The Bytown Bridges have just been completed, in precast concrete and aluminum. The band of the Royal Canadian Regiment plays as the crowd awaits the arrival of the Queen Mother. The announcer also describes the dignitaries waiting for the Queen Mother, including Charlotte Whitton, Mayor of Ottawa, and Mr. [Macfarlane], the Mayor of Pickering.~The description is interrupted by comments by the announcer to the recording room, to leave the tape running, to open a microphone and apologizing for the delay in covering the ceremony. Another broadcaster also describing the scene is audible in the background. There are several minutes of crowd noises and no talking. Then the arrival of the Queen Mother is described. A pipe band plays "The Road to the Isles". The Queen Mother inspects the guard. There are brief speeches by Major General Howard Kennedy, Chairman of the Federal District Commission, and by Ottawa Mayor Charlotte Whitton. The Queen Mother then talks to the dignitaries as "God Save the Queen" plays in the background. She leaves by automobile and the crowd cheers.
