Views of Hull, Que. and Parliament Hill, On. from the grounds of 27 Cliff St., Ottawa, Ont., the site of the Physical Testing Laboratory of the Department of the Interior; views of some of the equipment, interiors, and exteriors of the laboratories at Cliff Street and at McKay Street, Ottawa, Ont..

Technical equipment portrayed for verifying standards of length at the Dominion Land Surveys Laboratory (McKay Street) include: the 1 meter comparator, tape comparator device, and 4 metre rule carriages in the Meterological Section's testing room, ca. 1919-1925. Also included are photographs of: watch testing equipment, water bath thermometer comparator, and the machine shop, ca. 1920. Also pictured is a Sheepshanks Comparator, received from England in 1874, that had been used for comparing bronze standard yards.

One photograph depicts the "New" Observatory, Cliff St., Ottawa, built in 1912, which "was mainly used by surveyors to practice time, latitude, and longitude observations, in preparation for laying out the Dominion Lands Survey System in Western Canada," according to the caption.
