Sub-sub-series consists of files relating to a wide variety of subjects, each file bearing a distinctive central registry file number. While the original provenance of these records within the Department has been obscured, the records were filed according to early versions of the Customs and Excise central registry system and so have been described together. The sub-sub-series includes files on such matters as the approval, production and sale of excise stamps, 1933-1944; the Distant Early Warning System 1956-1958; smuggling; rent, supplies, and office accommodation; the counterfeiting of excise stamps; the exemption of duty on goods imported by Indians; files relating to the promotion of Arthur Lovell to Inspector of Customs, Halifax in 1925; and the flag incident at Skagway, Alaska. The sub-sub-series also includes files on the following subjects: the 1878 Provisional Boundary concerning the Stikine River, the 1913 Authority for Canadian Annexation of Northern Lands and Seas, the 1925 Macmillan Arctic Expedition and the 1898-1901 regulations concerning the transit of goods through Alaska. Also included are files related to various judicial enquiries and Royal Commission investigations (i.e. the Royal Commission on Customs and Excise; the Antonio Giroux Case, the Anpere Textile Company Case, the prosecution of Harry Bronfman, and Rex vs Consolidated Distilleries Belleville).
