The collection, is comprised of 201 Canadian and related postcard views, from the Provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan, and, also, from Great Britain. In addition, there are 2 Canadian souvenir folders of mechanically reproduced photographic views (postcard size) depicting scenes of Orillia, Ont., and Cape Breton, N.S. Approximately half the postcards were manufactured in Canada and the remainder, in the United States, Great Britain and Germany. All of the postcards are unused and some bear manuscript messages or notations.

Roe, Edward Allan, 1884-1973 : Edward Allan Roe was born on 28 November 1884, in the town of Newmarket, Ontario. He was the grandson of William Roe, a fur trader for the North-West Company, who subsequently became the first Postmaster of Newmarket (see: Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of York, Toronto, 1907), and a great grandson of Walter Roe, the first lawyer of Upper Canada (see: "Upper Canada Sketches", by W.R. Riddell and published in Toronto, in 1922). "Edward Allan Roe worked for most of his life for the International Circulation Division of Hearst Magazines Inc. He rose to be the Canadian District Manager for the Company and, as a result, travelled extensively throughout the Country." He was an avid collector and his postcard collection was one of the results of his travels. "Edgar Allan Roe never married and, in his later years, became passionately interested in his family history." He died in Newmarket, Ontario, on 27 November 1973. Letter from the donor, Mr. Jack P. Source of title:

Title based on name of collector.

Custodial history:

The collection was originally willed to the donor, Mr. Jack P. Francis, by Edward Allan Roe, who was distantly related to Mr. Francis' wife. Mr Francis subsequently left the collection with the National Library, who forwarded it to the National Archives.
