The fonds consists of photographs covering the period of 1954-1967 (with one assignment from each of 1969 and 1980), arranged sequentially by assignment number. There are 404 assignments, covering fashion, photojournalism, editorial and advertising work for Weekend Magazine, the Star Weekly, Chatelaine, Maclean's and other publications, and for Foster, J. Walter Thompson, Hayhurst and other advertising agencies. Individual assignments included anywhere from several to several hundred photographs, depending on both the assignment and the type of photography being produced (fashion, editorial, etc.). Within each assignment there is some repetition but the amount of repetition depends on the particular job.

The photographs are arranged chronologically by assignment.

Sebert, John, 1930-2015 : John Sebert was born in Toronto. A Toronto-based professional photographer, active in editorial, photo-journalism, advertising, and fashion photography from 1954 to 1967.

After studying at Ryerson Institute of Technology, he first came to prominence for his editorial work for the popular periodicals of the day with his iconic photos of Elvis Presley, John Diefenbaker, Stan Kenton, and Morley Callahan among others and later for his fashion photography.

In 1966, he started a film production company, which became so successful he left photography. As a film producer, he moved to British Columbia, where he made primarily television commercials and a few films. Over the years, he founded several companies specializing in the production of TV commercials and made close to a thousand ads over his career as well as longer format films.

John developed a taste for film noir and roamed the city of Toronto in search of what were often the B releases on twin bills. In 2001, he wrote a book called 'The Nabes' which celebrated many of the Toronto neighbourhood theatres he frequented and illustrated it with his photographs of those same establishments today alongside photos of them in their heyday.

John Sebert died on November 9, 2015 at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario at the age of eighty-five.

General note:

There is a master list of assignment titles prepared by Mr. Sebert in the accession file. This list cannot be considered a finding aid because it is not wholly accurate, as it includes some references to assignments which were not sent to the National Archives, and misses several others which were sent. In absence of a proper finding aid, this list can be used for reference purposes.

Source of title:

Title is based on the name of the photographer responsible for the creation of the images in the fonds.

Custodial history:

The photographs were in the possession of the donor until the donation was made to the National Archives in 1997.
