Lachine Navigation Company (Lower Canada) : The War of 1812 emphasized the need for a canal to overcome the Lachine Rapids on the south side of Montreal Island. Funds were appropriated in 1815 but no work was done. In 1819, a private company, the Lachine Navigation Company, was incorporated to build a canal, but with only preliminary work completed, the company was bought by the province in 1821.
