Sub-series consists of two ledgers showing subsidies awarded to various railway companies to assist in construction. The ledgers are arranged in alphabetical order by name of railway from the Alberta Southern Railway to the Inverness and Richmond Railway.

Each ledger entry provides the following information: name of railway, date, amount paid, authority for payment, a description of the section of the railway to which the subsidy applied, the act of parliament authorizing the subsidy, the total amount and the amount lapsed. The ledger entitled "Subsidies to Railways" is incomplete while the ledger entitled "Subsidy Agreements" also includes the date of the Order in Council and various construction details. The annual reports of the Department of Railways and Canals contain full descriptions of all subsidies granted to railroad companies.
