Fonds consists of records relating to life in public office, mainly in diplomacy, written or received by Thomas Robinson in his public capacities. Many documents relate to Anglo-French relations and to disputed lands and boundaries in the North American colonies. The fonds is located on microfilm reel A-1959.

Robinson, Thomas, 2nd Baron Grantham, 1738-1786 : Thomas Robinson was the eldest son of the 1st Baron Grantham and was born in 1738 in Vienna. He served as secretary of the British embassy to the congress at Augsburg in 1761. He was Ambassador to Madrid from 1771-1772. In 1766 he was appointed as a commissioner of trade and plantations and became the President of the Board of Trade and Foreign Plantations on 9 December 1780. He held this latter post until the abolition of the board in 1782. He then joined Lord Shelburne's administration as secretary of state for the foreign department in July 1782.

Robinson succeeded his father as Baron Grantham on his father's death in 1770 and took his seat in the House of Lords. He married Mary Jemima, second daughter of Philip Yorke, second Earl of Hardwicke, and of Jemima, his wife, the Marchioness Grey. He died at Grantham House in 1786 at age 47.
