The fonds is comprised of photographic images taken by Thomas E.H. Farley depicting Canadian artist Laurence E. Hyde (1914-1987), at his home in Ottawa, working alone in his studio or relaxing with members of his family (i.e. his wife, Bettye and sons Anthony, b.1946, and Christopher, b.1949). It also includes photographic images of the proofs for some of the wood engravings that the artist created for his book "Southern Cross", (published November 1951, by The Ward Ritchie Press: Los Angeles, California), as well as a first edition hard bound copy of the aformentioned publication. This book contains 118 wood engravings, printed from the original wood blocks, which were engraved, by the artist, during the years 1948-1951. The photographs were taken, by Dr. Farley, on 16 October 1951, to commemorate the imminent publication of "Southern Cross".

Farley, Thomas 1917- : Thomas E. H. Farley was born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, in 1917; and came to Ottawa, ca. 1930. During World War II, he served in the R.C.A.F., as a pilot (1941-1945); where he was awarded the Air Force Medal. Subsequently, after studies at University, he obtained employment with the National Film Board, as a documentary film-maker (1949-1959). Among the film series and individual films that he was involved with were: "The History Makers" (series); "Perspective" (series); "Go to Blazes" (film); "Man of America" (film); as well as others. During his long career, he has held a number of other positions, in various fields. These include: Free-lance writer, for "Expo'67", the "C.N.E.", the CBC's "20/20" and "Telescope". He has also served as Media Manager for Carleton University; Head of Creative Services for the PSC Language Bureau's "Dialogue Canada"; Deputy Director of Information, Department of External Affairs; and, finally, English Lecturer at Ottawa University. Dr. Farley holds an M.A., from Carleton University, as well as an M.Ed., and a Ph.D., from Ottawa University. His books include: "It was a Plane" (Ryerson), "The Last Spaceman" and "Exiles and Pioneers" (Borealis Press). He is married to Susan Tate of Montreal and they have two grown up daughters, Hilary-Anne and Kimberley. Now retired, Dr. Farley and his wife live in Ottawa; where they enjoy a wide variety of interests. Biographical notes from donor. See accession file.
