The fonds consists of one hundred and twenty-nine letters from Lovat Dickson to Neville Thompson dating from 1972 to Dickson's death in 1986. The letters discuss Dickson's various publishing projects, including his biography of Radclyffe Hall, his revision of his biography of Grey Owl, and his history of the Royal Ontario Museum. They document his work on a television documentary on the Massey family. They reveal his dissatisfaction with his writing as he grows older and his difficulties with the ROM book. They offer advice on publishing (particularly academic and scholarly publishing), drawing on Dickson's long experience in the publishing world, and offer his reminiscences about writers he had known (e.g. Rebecca West, H.G. Wells). Included are some copies of lectures Dickson gave, and the letters document his honorary degrees and lecturing across Canada, as well as his travels to England. There are many references to the Arts and Letters Club and to fellow members (including Donald Creighton, Barker Fairley, Gary Michael Dault). The letters give an account of Robertson Davies' efforts to persuade Charles Ritchie to write a biography of Vincent Massey, and Neville Thompson's own ambitions to do so. Also included are a few additional letters from other correspondents, including one from the celebrated scholar A.L. Rowse, complaining about professors, two from Donald Creighton and one from Charles Ritchie.

Thompson, Neville, 1938- : Neville Thompson was born in England in 1938 and came to Canada as a child in 1948. He was educated at McMaster University and Princeton. A specialist in modern history, Thompson began his academic career as a lecturer at the University of Western Ontario in 1965. He taught history at McMaster from 1970 until 1973, when he returned to Western as an associate professor, becoming a full professor in 1986. Professor Thompson is the author of "The Anti-Appeasers: Conservative Opposition to Appeasement in the 30s" (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1971) and "Wellington After Waterloo" (London & New York: Routledge & Kegan Paul, 1986). Thompson first met the Canadian publisher and author Lovat Dickson in 1972, when he arranged for Dickson to give a lecture at McMaster. They were fellow members of the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto and collaborated on a number of publishing projects.
