Collection consists of an album entitled: Oppen's Postage Stamp Album, first issued in 1863 in London, England. This copy is a first edition of a series of 30 editions which were published in London between 1863 and 1891. The album was kept by Henry James Clark of Toronto and by subsequent members of his family, namely, Harriet Clark and Henry Clark Nasmith. It contains approximately 933 pieces of mint and used postage, revenue, and local stamps from 80 countries, states, and colonies, issued between 1840 and 1927. Some notable stamps in the collection include: a Canada 1857 1/2d unused, a Canada 1859 6d perforated, and a New Brunswick 1851 3d unused.

Nasmith, Henry Clark, 1874-1949 : Henry Clark Nasmith was born in Toronto, on 27 May 1874, son of John Drysdale Nasmith (owner of the Nasmith Steam Bakery). He attended school in Toronto until the legal leaving age of fourteen and having completed grade eight in 1888, went to work in the book warehouse of the Copp Clark Publishing Company. In 1894, he went to work for the Bank of Commerce in Thorold and subsequently worked in a number of branches throughout Ontario. In 1902, he left the bank and for a short time owned and worked a ranch near Red Deer Alberta. In 1903, he returned to Toronto to take up the position of Secretary Treasurer of the Nasmith Company Ltd. When the Nasmith Company was sold in 1912, he joined the accounting firm of Clarkson, Gordon & Dilworth and in 1913 he qualified as a Chartered Accountant.

In 1904, he married Emily McBride of Port Perry. In 1913, his wife Emily died suddenly and he moved with their son Dugald to Port Perry, where he purchased property and established an apple orchard. In 1915, he married Florence McCaw of Port Perry and their family consists of six children: Malcolm, Clara, Hugh, David, Florence, and Stuart. For a time, during the 1914-18 war, he rejoined Clarkson, Gordon & Dilworth for auditing assignments of war supply contracts. From 1931 to 1937 he acted as clerk and treasurer for the Village of Port Perry. He died on 29 April 1949, and is buried in the Nasmith family plot in Pine Grove Cemetery in Port Perry. Donor

Custodial history:

The album was originally purchased in 1866 by Henry James Clark (1823-1892) of Toronto. He gave the album to his daughter Florence Mary Harriet Clark (1868-1942) who added the majority of the stamps to the collection. In 1892, she gave the album to her nephew, Henry Clark Nasmith, of Toronto. The album then passed to his son, Hugh W. Nasmith, who in 1997, donated it to the National Archives of Canada.
