English: This accession contains reference materials created and maintained by Transport Canada pertaining to air occurrence reports and investigations to 1977.
Boxes 1 to 11 contain copies of air occurence reports that could be requested from the Department of Transport. The reports come from all regions of Canada for the years 1949 to 1977. The reports are grouped by year into binders, and are arranged roughly chronologically within each year. The majority of the reports included in the binders consist of one or two page summary accident reports, although in some cases the report in the binder consists of a more in-depth report of a formal enquiry or inquiry. Most reports in this collection have been labelled with a serial number, although the serial numbering system varies by year. Reports pertaining to foreign aircraft included an "F" in the serial number, and these reports were sometimes collated separately rather than maintained with the other occurences for the year.
Box 8 also contains a faded copy of a typewritten ledger titled "A Record of Aircraft Accidents in Canada which involved death or injury to Air Pilots, Passengers or Third Parties" that lists air occurrences from 1919 to 1951. The ledger usually contains the following type of information for each accident: date, place, aircraft type and markings, owner, pilot, crew, passengers, and remarks. The ledger copy was apparently maintained by Transport Canada as a rare copy of "old accidents."
Box 11 also contains three typewritten chronological lists used to find the file numbers for accidents for which boards of inquiry (or the like) had been convened. The three lists -- for reports of domestic accidents 1948-1963, foreign aircraft 1949-1957, and dewline accidents 1955-1957 -- are in fragile condition and the photocopies should be consulted rather than the originals.
Boxes 12 to 25 contain a typewritten index card system (consisting of 5" by 8" punch cards) used by Transport Canada for air occurences 1948 to 1977. The majority of the index cards are organized by date, and typically contain the following type of information: name of pilot(s), date of accident, name of operator, file numbers, aircraft model, aircraft registration, location of accident, category of damage, injury. In some cases an accident summary is found on the the reverse of the index card. The index cards are particularly valuable for searching for information by date of accident.
Box 26 contains three indexes to accidents from 1970 onwards: by file number, by province and location, and by pilot name.
