This sub-series contains files created in the Manitoba regional office itself as well as those created in various district offices (agencies) which were amalgamated and eventually came under the direct administration of the regional office. Included are files once maintained in the Clandeboye, Fisher River, Portage la Prairie, Norway House, Dauphin, and The Pas Agencies. These files are arranged according to the Modified Duplex Numeric System with responsibility codes (e.g. 501-Regional Office, 578-The Pas, 577-Portage la Prairie) followed by subject block designations. As well, the accession includes education-related files arranged according to education district responsibility codes corresponding to the individual agencies (e.g. 521-The Pas-Education, 511-Portage La Prairie-Education).
The sub-series includes agency copies of paylists (annuity, interest, surrender) which contain, for earlier years, occasional letters concerning transfers, and assigning people to accept payments for others. The paylists date to the 1880's. Some membership registers are scattered among the paylists. There are also a large number of school attendance registers for a number of schools. Some of these date to the first decade of the twentieth century.
In the file portion of the sub-series subjects covered reflect the wide scope of operations of field offices with a heavy emphasis on schools and education. Other areas include: band management, organization and administration, staff matters, buildings, engineering services, equipment and supplies, arts and crafts, farming, health services, law enforcement, economic development, placement of labor, reports and returns, social activities, trust funds, welfare, statistics, federal-provincial relations, and cultural affairs. Virtually no land or natural resources related records are found in this sub-series with the exception of an important block of former Shannon files relating to sale and lease collections for the Clandeboye Agency (mostly St. Peter's Reserve).
