Sub-series consists of headquarter's administrative and operational correspondence for the years when the Atmospheric Environment Service was known as the Meteorological Office. Official correspondence received by the Marine Branch between the years 1868 and approximately 1923 was organized by subject and placed on registry files. Each registry file (or subject) was allotted a number in consecutive order of numerical sequence. In 1923, this registry system was replaced by a departmental subject file classification plan; however, some correspondence continued to be organized under the old registry system right up to the year 1936. Conversely, some correspondence dated prior to 1923 was removed from the old registry system and reclassified under the later subject file plan.

Sub-series also includes microfilm copies of correspondence registers.

Canada. Meteorological Service : The Canadian Meteorological Service was established in 1871. Its founding director was Professor George Templeton Kingston and its headquarters was the Toronto Central Office. This predecessor of the Atmospheric Environment Service, was initially part of the Marine Branch of the Department of Marine and Fisheries. The core function of the service at this time was the preparation of marine storm warnings for shipping and fishing. In 1936, the Meteorological Service was transferred from the Department of Marine and Fisheries and became the Meteorological Division within the Air Service of the Department of Transport.
