Oral history interview by Guy Surprenant of Stan Farrell, Officer Responsible for Classification at Regional Reception Centre in Kingston. Farrell discusses his joining Kingston Penitentiary (KP) as supervisor of Classification in 1961; nature of Calssification officer work in 1960s; early use of Temporary Absences for inmates and fears of wardens of their abuse; transfer of prisoners from medium to maximum security and vice versa; early escapes at Joyceville Penitentiary due to having only single fence; 1971 riot at KP citing causes as prisoners uneasiness at possible transfer to Millhaven P. due to its reported heavy use of electronic surveillance. Also discussed is: close relation between politics and prison administration; effect of parliamentary committees and reports on correctional services; conflict between incoming University educated "program people" and long-term correctional staff as well as the early separation of the two; alienation of "old guard" from decision making process; Farrell's own academic background; change of guards being more friendly and helpful to inmates; corporat punishment and use of strap as behaviour modifier. Topics also include: introduction of increased privileges and programs for inmates inmminimum, medium and maximum penitentiaries; comparison of modern prisons such as Millhaven and Archambault to more "personal" environment of KP; general rapport between guards and inmates at KP; interpersonal skills needed to deal effectively with inmates; general strain of prison work; prisoner grievances; anecdotes of some prisoners' exploits; and procedures concerning prisoner transfer to other penitentiaries. <1h 26mn>
